I used to try to see the good in people, especially work colleagues and neighbours and would give them the benefit of doubt for any silly indiscretions.
I'd tell myself as an excuse for their behaviour that they may have had a bad weekend or domestic/money problems or maybe I had done something that had upset them.
Time and time again they would disappoint me with their continuous sniding, bitching, backstabbing and untrustworthy behaviour and this is all in good times too!! Imagine THE depths they'd go to when tshtf??

good folk are spread pretty thin -- i'm an older guy, but like you, i'm still amazed at how low the baseline behavior of the average modern person is
what's most disturbing is that most don't NEED to act the way they do. . . they do it bc they LIKE being assholes and thugs
