When I designed my blast shelter Firehold Bravo in 1998, I tried to incorporate elements in it's design that would make it proof not just against fallout from a nuclear war or a volcanic ash eruption but also safe against the kind of broad spectrum radiation that occurs when the earth's magnetic shield fails.
