Tomita - Score For "LAST DAYS OF PLANET EARTH"

I don't know if you have had a chance to view the apocalyptic apocryphal film called PROPHECIES OF NOSTRADAMUS or CATASTROPHE 1999. I saw it when I was younger before it was literally taken out of circulation and all copies were destroyed or locked away in vaults. The version I saw back in the military was heavily edited and I recently got the opportunity to see and hear the original uncut film.

There was hardly any graphic violence in this film and it was pretty tame visuals but it was the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. It captured ITZ more than any other film of that era. Deadly four inch slugs, cannibal mutants and reflective skies. The film was supposed to be about the prophecies of Nostradamus but it was tapping into something primal in the human psyche. A few years back I blogged about the visionary sketches by Basil Wolverton depicting the apocalypse. It was almost as if somebody captured those horrific images in film. The story was disjointed and barely had anything resembling a plot but something deeper appeared to catch hold of you while you watched it. There are so many bizarre things in this film I could not begin to list them all here. Lunatic suicide cults, hippie pinko dopesmoking anarchists and good old fashioned cannibals. Children appear to begin developing all kinds of strange powers as the apocalypse approaches, almost as if long-dormant genes in the human race were being activated to help (some of) them survive.

The movie ends with two mutant ape children fighting over snake meat in a blasted wasteland barren of all life on a dead planet embalmed in radiation. Not a Disney classic for certain. In the edited versions, they use the "this was all a dream" escape clause at the end to lessen the impact of the finale.

I'm not the only one who found it very powerful and unsettling. Toho eventually banned the film in Japan, withdrew all prints from theatres and essentially denied the movie had ever existed. It seemed to upset people who had never found cause to complain about similar fare like THE LAST WAR. Some Japanese cinema goers claimed they vomited after leaving the theater and others said they had nightmares for years after viewing it. People complained it was just a bit too over-the-top and Toho Studios was pressured to repent and cast the movie into oblivion.

The most amazing part of the movie was the dreamlike memorable score by Tomita. I grew up listening to Tomita when I was younger, he was a big part of my lonely adolescence and teenage years. I used to listen to his pop update of HOLST's THE PLANETS over and over again. It was beautiful. Tomita managed to combine about four different styles including a groovy cosmic retro sixties beat that might have come from "Barbarella" for the score to LAST DAYS. It was truly inspired music - even heroic and optimistic - for something with such a morbid and nihilistic focus. It is as if Tomita was channeling Vault-Co three decades ago when he composed it.

An Open Letter I Sent To Parents At My Children's School Before I Brought Them Home

Before my children were homeschooled, they actually went to a "Christian" private school for a while before we pulled them out. One night after coming back from a "parent information" night, I was so incensed at the unbelievable propaganda on this slide projector during this presentation I wrote a letter to other parents at the school that night.

Of course it was pointless and failed to get a single response. It was an exercise in futility. Instead, I pulled my children out of that school and we educated them at home until their senior year.

One of the points emphasized after this long, bewildering spiel about our "fragile planet" (Any Christian would be ashamed to sit and listen to this tripe) we got a big speech about the school's emphasis on homework.

HOMEWORK AND ENVIRONMENTALISM

I don't actually send this with the expectation it will accomplish anything. It won't. I know a lot about modern people and I know they are impervious to reason in general. I'm just sending it because it is my responsibility as a Christian to do so. The watchman (a person designated to be vigilant) will be required to stay awake and will have to give an account of himself if he didn't raise the alarm. Nothing in there about getting people to listen.

It's important to keep in mind while reading this that average IQ has declined from 104+ (spectacular!) in Australia in 1955 to 97 today. In 1965 an IQ of 95 was considered clinically mentally defective and is the origin of the term "cretin" in psychiatry. Koko the Sign Language gorilla has scored 91 on the exact same test under supervision by psychologists. A loss of 7 points of IQ in two generations is equivalent to two complete derivations in the IQ test when placed on an appropriate Bell curve. An average score of 97 in Australia means that more than half of the population scores less than 97 and well into the same range as a large silverback ape taught sign language who lives in a trailer behind the Smithsonian Museum. It could be worse - recent collation of results in America indicates the average IQ there is 96 as of this year.

All of this shift has occurred during the period of "progressive" education in the schools and ever increasing amounts of homework.

• International comparisons offer no reassurance. In describing the results of their analysis of student performance across 50 countries, which was published last year, Pennsylvania State University researchers David Baker and Gerald LeTendre said: "Not only did we fail to find any positive relationships," but "the overall correlations between national average student achievement and national averages in (amount of homework assigned) ... are all negative."
• Finally, no study has supported the claim that homework teaches good work habits or develops positive character traits such as self-discipline and independence.

In every single peer reviewed study done where students were given more than 30 minutes of homework, there was a decided negative penalty to scholastic achievement. In others words, 90 minutes of homework 5 nights a week is guaranteed to harm your child's development and their grades. Amongst many other detrimental effects there is a significant rise in teenage suicide rates where homework is more than 30 minutes a night. Cortisol levels at bedtime are much higher in students assigned regular homework. Adolescent liver damage is associated with some precincts of Japan which formerly assigned lots of homework to students. (Japan has had a sea change on this subject since then.) Mental illness and high levels of neurosis and anxiety are most commonly found in teens assigned large amounts of homework they can never quite keep up with and which they will be punished for failing to complete. Physiologically, children given lots of homework share hormonal profiles similar to rats given constant electric shocks, forced to swim to survive and not permitted a darkness cycle in their cage in which to sleep. This has the net effect on rats of producing smaller brains at maturity, a higher incidence of cancer and brain tumors and an earlier death.

To really understand why homework is so important to academics, read influential marxist Antonio Gramsci's writings on the utility of "education" to turn children into mindless vegetables and slaves of the State. In order to truly "take possession of their souls," as Gramsci described it, it would be necessary to limit their interaction with parents when they were away from the "schools." This could most effectively be accomplished by requiring a "second shift" of them at home which would consume all of their time and leave nothing but meals and provisions of clothing and board to the parents. (Gramsci called this the "cuckoo" strategy, after the Cuckoo bird's trick of leaving his egg in other bird's nests to get them to raise their young on their behalf.)

Gramsci is seen by many as one of the most important Marxist thinkers of the twentieth century, in particular as a key thinker in the development of Western Marxism. He wrote more than 30 notebooks and 3000 pages of history and analysis during his imprisonment. These writings, known as the Prison Notebooks, contain Gramsci's tracing of Italian history and nationalism, as well as some ideas in Marxist theory, critical theory and educational theory associated with his name, such as:

• Cultural hegemony as a means of maintaining the capitalist state.
• The need for popular workers' education to encourage development of intellectuals from the working class.
• The distinction between political society (the police, the army, legal system, etc.) which dominates directly and coercively, and civil society (the family, the education system, trade unions, etc.) where control is instituted through ideology or by "means of consent," as Gramsci put it, referring to parents fooled into relinquishing responsibility for the formation of their children to the academic classes.
• 'Absolute historicism'. (Control of history)
• The critique of economic determinism. (Control of all economics theory to deny all rational laws of economics)
• The critique of philosophical materialism. (Postmodernism, teaching that reality isn't real and is whatever the State says it is)

Gramsci has been called the "secular Christ" of the academic class throughout the Western world and the single most important influence on the educational curriculum that is now uniformly pushed in Western countries. Albert Gore's father (indicted for spying for the Soviet Union twice) raised his son on Gramsci's writings and carried a picture of Gramsci in his suitcase everywhere he went. Gramsci's "big idea" was to conquer the world through a fake environmental crisis of some kind. Gramsci suggested if you could scare people badly enough with a fake crisis it would no longer matter whether communism worked or didn't work, people would surrender their freedoms to it. Gramsci coined the ideological phrase "fragile environment" you saw on the slide projector at the Hillcrest school presentation last night. Antonio said people must be trained to think of the planet as a delicate abused waif that only the State could protect once given sufficient power. Of course, the planet has watched as 99% of all the species that have ever existed on it have become extinct (mostly from cyclic climate changes) like water rolling off a duck's back without so much as flinching, but we are supposed to believe that it was just barely scraping by until humans appeared and bandit classes formed the State to organize theft from agrarian producers.

Remember, before John Howard left office, he and his staff were shocked to discover that hardcore marxist radicals had somehow wormed their way onto the boards at the National Educational Curriculum committee despite clear and blunt instructions to avoid putting politically motivated activists on it. Further discussions had one senior official in Parliament describing the committee as "loaded with people you would expect to find planning education in Red China, not Australia." This quote was splashed on the front page of the Gold Coast Bulletin when it came out.
