कश्मीर एक हिमालय पर्वत का क्षेत्र है जो कि भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप के उत्तर में है। प्राचीन काल में कश्मीर शब्द उस घाटी के लिए उपयोग किया जाता था जो कि वृहत हिमालय तथा पीर पंजाल पर्वत के मध्य में है। आज यह एक बड़ा क्षेत्र है जिसमे कश्मीर घाटी जम्मू तथा लद्दाख क्षेत्र शामिल है और यह भारत तथा पाकिस्तान दोनों में हैं। भारत तथा पाकिस्तान दोनों ही कश्मीर अपना दावा ठोंकते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त चीन के पास अक्साई चिन का हिस्सा है जो कि उसने 1962 में भारत से छीन लिया। भारत का सियाचिन ग्लेशियर पर 1984 से नियंत्रण है। इसकी सीमा चीनी प्रान्त शिनजियांग तथा तिब्बत से लगती है।

Kashmir is a Himalayan region the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent, North of Pakistan. Historically the term Kashmir was used to refer to the valley lying between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal range. Today Kashmir refers to a much larger area that includes the regions of Kashmir Valley and Jammu (Vallapura) that is divided between Pakistan and the Republic of India and Ladakh to the east forms a part of this core-dispute. The region is divided among three countries in a bitter territorial dispute: ► Pakistan administers the (Northern Areas and the self-ruled Azad Jammu and Kashmir) in the northwest portion, ► India controls the central, southern and eastern portions and Ladakh, and the ► People's Republic of China rules the northeastern portion (Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract). India controls the majority of the Siachen Glacier (higher peaks) since 1984, whereas Pakistan controls the lower peaks. It borders in China ► Xinjiang and ► Tibet.
